PARAPHRASE

Many systems in the body are assessed to find out what is behind the dysfunction. Osteopathic Manual Practitioner’s seek the cause of pain and dysfunction by taking a thorough case history and physical assessment to look at the relationship of multiple systems in the body (internal organs, nerves, cardio-respiratory bones, joints and muscles and related vascular and lymphatic elements).OMP’s are trained to “listening to the body” and they use a wide range of hands-on techniques to provide a multi-system approach, which facilitates the primary cause(s) of dysfunction to be established. Osteopathic techniques are then used which include stretching, resistance and gentle pressure also known as mobilizations and muscle energy techniques, and visceral release. These techniques work together to promote healing, reduce tension, lower stress levels, increase mobility, decrease inflammation and restore health throughout the whole body. Other techniques that may be used is Osteopathic massage, trigger point and myofascial release, positional release. Techniques aim to address the cause of dysfunction and enable the body to incorporate changes. A patient-centered approach is taken that emphasizes teamwork between patient and practitioner, treatment plans are considered then tailored and may include exercises, stretches, postural correction and other advice. An OMP has a different understanding of the body, we are not interested in treating the problem as much as we are in finding and dealing with what caused it or the source of the problem.
